Scientists have found one of the largest subglacial lake underneath Antarctica. This lake which is called LakeVostok has been hidden underneath the thick layer of ice for over 20 million years, in other words, the lake hasn't been exposed to the external environment for 20 million years.
The ice is around 12,366 feet (3,769m) and Russian scientists have been drilling through the ice for over two decades. The scientists are hoping to find new discoveries of species, and microbial (that existed before ice age). 
The difficulty with this project was the fact that the subglacier lake was underneath the surface of minus 89 Celcius (one of the coldest on Earth), which led to many machine failures. Concern was with regards to the machines that were used to break the ice to reach the pristine lake; scientists did not desire for the lake to be contaminated.
The research of this lake will provide for us new insights into science, climate, and of our Earth itself. Hopefully we'll discover something new and interesting (perhaps a sea creature???)
